Lahaul & Spiti Tour Overview

Winter, which embraces Lahaul, usually in the first week of November, and stays on until the fourth week of March, is a cold, harsh and tough time in the valley, especially the high altitude ones. While it may not be the easiest time to travel through Lahaul, it certainly is the most rewarding time to come visit.

Everything – every house, hamlet, road and village – dons a cloak of white. The cottony snow is constant - stretching on for as far as the eye can see. The horizon is a myth, for you can never tell where the land ends and the skies begin.

As winter sets in, Lahaul assumes a timeless nature – like an enchanting postcard waiting for you to dive right in. With temperatures going below -20 degrees centigrade, the Chenab river has more or less frozen up. A few defiant streams tirelessly cut through the ice, giving a surreal glazed feel to the basin.

Earlier during these months, the famous Manali – Rohtang Pass – Lahaul road stayed closed due to heavy snowfall. Leaving Lahaul accessible only for 6 months of the year. Now with the newly inaugurated Atal Tunnel, an entirely new valley is waiting to be explored.

This curated Winter Expedition is designed for travellers for an authentic snow experience with comfortable and challenging conditions during the winter months. Shared by a small group of travellers, this Winter Expedition includes travelling in comfortable and safe Force Traveler to some of the most popular villages of Himachal through the World's longest Tunnel – Atal Rohtang. Marvel at the wondrous transition from Manali to the new winter wonderland, Lahaul.

A drive through Spiti is comparable to a roller coaster that thrills you at every turn, raises your blood pressure, and completely satisfies your thirst for adventure before leaving you speechless. And this Winter Road Trip To Lahaul Valley 4 Days from us at Zomsa Holidays & Adventures will take you on a unique journey across a desolate, icy desert that has been covered in a fluffy layer of snow, giving it the appearance of a winter wonderland straight out of a fairytale.

The Spiti valley, with its colourful monasteries, snow-capped mountains, little hamlets, glittering lakes, and landscapes that you could only see on your Instagram feed, emerges as you travel further into the rough terrain.

Lahaul Valley is home to stunning landscapes, tall peaks, deep valleys, hanging glaciers, rivers, monasteries, monuments, a blend of Hindu and Buddhist cultures, and winding roads. It also contains several tiny valleys. The Lahaul-Spiti district is divided into the subdistricts of Lahaul and Spiti. The formidable Kunzum pass separates Lahaul and Spiti.

Lahaul & Spiti Tour Itinerary

Day 1
We head to the most scenic part of this holiday – Lahaul Valley. To get here, we drive through the 9 km long Atal Tunnel – which is recognized as the world’s longest highway tunnel. The tunnel is built with ultra-modern specifications in the Pir Panjal range of Himalayas at an altitude of 3,000 metres (10,000 feet). At the end of the tunnel, get a chance to witness awe-inspiring and endless Greater Himalayan views of pristine high altitude snow-capped mountains and a turquoise blue river, quietly flowing into the horizon. We spend the night at a basic homestay of a warm Lahauli family.
Day 2
On the second day of this Lahaul Valley road trip, wake up to explore the winter wonderland of Lahaul. Having been cut off from the rest of the world in the winters, 2020 was the first year that outsiders were able to get a chance to discover the hidden winter wonders in Lahaul Valley. Temperatures here may dip up to -30 degrees centigrade in the winters, but a Tandoor (traditional heater) in the kitchen, delicious local food and the hospitality of your host family will fill you with warmth. The itinerary for today will be determined by the prevailing weather conditions. If we have a sunny day, get ready for a guided hike around the village, or drive to nearby accessible places for some stunning photos of the Greater Himalayan range. We spend our second night at the same local homestay.
Day 3
On the third day of this Lahaul trip, while we are now used to the cold temperatures, we get ready to witness the other adjoining areas of Lahaul, with the grace of the weather god. Today, we plan to move towards the eastern side of Lahaul to a warmer village called Keylong, here stay at a guesthouse with ample sunlight and better connectivity. If the weather permits we will also head to the river side to get a closer glimpse of heavenly turquoise blue water. We check into a comfortable guesthouse at Keylong and rest.
Day 4
On the last day of this Lahaul Valley road trip, with a slightly heavy heart but open minds, we get ready to leave the place that now has a special place in our hearts and what we called as home for the last few days. The people of Lahaul and the mountains wish you and salute your bravery to visit this place in such tough conditions. While, on our way back, we will take a quick stop at Solang for some last bunch of snow games. While we head to a tiny hamlet called Naggar for lunch at the castle. We end the trip with a drop back to Manali.
